Having been to the website at www.winlinux.net, as I understand it,
winlinux installs as a MS windows application, i.e. it installs over MS
Windows, so no, it cannot be installed to a clean harddisk - it seems to
use space from the MS windows installation disk. It is true that you would
not need much virus protection for the linux part, but since it runs as a
MS windows application, the MS portion will still be vulnerable. I see
this as a distribution with little inherant value. If you're out to 'try
linux' you could just as well start with something like knoppix which will
boot and run from a CD and can also be installed to hard disk.

HI,

I have never used Winlinux so I can not speak directly to is usefullness.

However, a previous poster (ray 2/7/2003) implies that Winlinux needs
windows to run, however from the Winlinux web site on the install page
we can find this:

"When you install WinLinux 2003 you won't believe how easy is it. Once
installed, next time you restart your computer you can choose between
Windows and WinLinux 2003."

This implies that a full-fledged Linux system is installed onto your
hard drive. I would suspect that the two installations would function
independently of each other.

We also find this on the same page:

"WinLinux works absolutly independently from Windows and after
installing it you can remove Windows from your computer keeping
your original files."

To me this implies that Winlinux will use nothing from Microsoft. I
suspect that what they have done is to make a graphical installer that
runs as a windows application that leads you through the installation
process. They also may use some of the information that Windows
keeps about hardware to configure the Linux half.

From what I have read, the only reason that I see to use Winlinux
is if you can-not (or will-not) partition your hard drive. Also, the
Winlinux distro may be of use to a complete `newbe' because it
sounds like most of the choices are already made.

My suggestion:

Get a disk partition tool, and create a new partition on your hard drive
(10 GByte is more then enough) and install a Linux system on the new
partition. If you are running a Windows system that uses the NTFS
file system, you might want to use Mandrake -- the distro comes with
built in read support for NTFS partitions (Redhat does not ship with
NTFS support, but you can add it on).

Regards,
George
